In phase 3 we started to define the tent’s final design and construction.

Our main issue for the following workflow was to find an optimal solution to combine technical needs as well as aestetical requirements as further step in the design process of the Heimplanet tent.

Due to diverse variations of design we tried to figure out, which composition between size, technical circumstances, structure and design might be the best solution to reach a high aeshtetical and funtional output.

A various number of different air- passage structures arised during our workflow.

One of the main shaping elements in the design process was the consideration of air allocation inside the blow-up bearing structure.

A main issue was to develop a design for bearing structure, which requires as little air volume as possible for maximum stability. Furthermore it was important to find a smart possibility to insert and dispose air easily.

After the descision was made concerning the final design of the bearing structure, we started to concentrate more on the details. Our main focus was to design a well functioning and easy to handle aeration system.

An entrace in a geodesic dome is a difficult topic concerning convenience without modifying the geometrical structure and overall appearance.

We were looking for a design that did not modify the geodesic structure but has an awning.

We put he awning into the tent and called it apsis.

Based on our blueprints Comprisetec started to build the first functional model. They produced a variety of patterns concerning the hexagon and pentagon elements of the bearing structure.

We were looking for something different, something new. And what we found is a concept that – in its fundamentals – was developed a long time ago but is up to date as ever. But more important then that, it is different and because of this very inspiring for our whole project.

A geodesic dome is a domed or vaulted structure of straight elements that form interlocking polygons.

(…) The first dome that could be called “geodesic” in every respect was designed just after World War I by Walther Bauersfeld,^[1] chief engineer of the Carl Zeiss optical company, for a planetarium to house his new planetarium projector. Buckminster Fuller named the dome “geodesic” from field experiments in 1948 and 1949. Even though Buckminster Fuller (Bucky) was not the inventor of the geodesic dome concept, he was the one who formed a whole philosophy around it and shaped the understanding, people have about it today.

The geodesic dome appealed to Fuller because it was extremely strong for its weight, its “omnitriangulated” surface provided an inherently stable structure, and because a sphere encloses the greatest volume for the least surface area.(…)

His personality and his thoughts inspired not just our tent concept, but also our whole approach. He was definitely a person with a vision and his own thinking.

Yesterday was a great day for inspiration. I stumbled upon some things and realized that they all have one thing in common, they tell you to “Do Your Own Thing (and share it)”! And that is exactly what I am doing and want to do even more.

What is meant by “Do Your Own Thing”? It’s easy, it means: get up, take some time and do what you like. Do anything, but it’s important to do something creative what your heart beats for. Do something you always wanted to do. Take photos, write a short story, knit yourself some pair of gloves, craft your own chair…and then share it. By this way people will recognize you and who knows what will happen next. (…)

In phase 2 we started to devise the in phase 1 chosen designs.

The selection of Stefan and Stefan was focused on techical details and constructions, as well as features, bags and tents in general.

Based on this selection, we started to create different tent concepts for possible appearances and solutions concerning the tent design. In a first approach we made some studies concerning the geodetic geometrical structures to figure out which one is most suitable to become a tent. Furthermore we thought how to implement features as bags, pockets and electrical devices according to several concepts.

The roof is supposed to be transparent, we call it sky spotter (sky spotter).

The main point of the design is to abrogate the knot-points of the geodesies. The triangular surfaces are connected by the edges.

We call it tangential geodetic cupola.

The upper part of the tent is transparent. A bag can be used as pocket space and textile blinds. LED´s are integrated in the upper area to illuminate the tent. The backpack is integrated in the tent construction and can be used as a hand-pump to blow up the tent as well as storage devise.

The tent has two entrances. Row tent building is possible. An overlaying awning serves as rain protection.

The geometrical structure of the tent allows a double sided entry system. The entrance can be opened like a venetian blind from both sides.

The last page of our presentation shows a first impression of applicable materials.

The process:

In the beginning we started a research concerning any kind of structures stabilized by fillings of all kinds. Our interest was focused on man made artefacts and natural appearances. During our work we developed a few conceptboards which were made of images showing tendencies of research in inflatable structures, such as grown geometrical structures modified by environmental influences.

We were inspired by topics such as microbiological systems, diatoms, leave veins, blood vessels, as well as urban architecture, platonic bodies and inflated products.

After a first review of the research we started to sketch. To get in touch with the meaning of camping and owning a tent, we used our drawings to analyse those questions. A variety of design tendencies arose in a bunch of drawings.

To organise the tangled mass our next step was to set up the following design topics:

Those themes depict a way of construction, design and behaviour. Every topic is devided into three to four subitems. Each segment has a different focus on useability, appearance and design.

Concluding the design step we presented our work in the organised structure shown above. Together, we selected a number of designs which we will define in the phase 02.

1. The handling.

It is not an impossible mission, to set up a tent, but it is no real fun either, at least most of the time. Before you go on a tour with your tent you should practice the whole set up at least once or twice, to get a real sense of what you are doing. Yes, there are some tents, which are trying to offer an easy handling, but there is no real satisfying solution available, at least from our point of view. But there is another essential aspect, which these tents do not offer yet:

2. The design.

A tent is a tent is tent. But why? Why are there so many different tents available today and they all look somehow the same or at least really similar. Why is there not a tent with an interesting design? Something different, something new. Does nobody care? Is design something less important, when it comes to a tent? We don´t think so. We think it is a technical problem. Most tents work with a construction made out of tent poles and fabric, so there is a natural limitation for the design and the architecture of classical tents. If we want to change the design, we have to change the technical construction.

3. The construction.

If we want to develop a new tent with a new design and handling concept, we have to overcome the limitations set by the tent construction of poles and fabric avaiable today. This was our starting point.

The Idea.

After a long period of research, hours of discussions and first tests we decided to chose air as a main factor to combine these three aspects. Air was our key, which would be able to combine all this different aspects in a new tent concept.

We call this tent concept: heimplanet
